Apple Commits More Than $30 Billion to Broadcom Deal Expanding U.S. Chip Production

Apple is making one of its largest semiconductor investments to date, committing more than $30 billion to an expanded partnership with Broadcom that will significantly increase the production of advanced wireless chips in the United States. The agreement, which extends through 2031, represents a major step in Apple's long term strategy to strengthen its domestic supply chain while supporting the growth of American manufacturing and semiconductor production.


Under the new agreement, Apple will continue relying on Broadcom as a key supplier of radio frequency components known as FBAR filters. These specialized chips are essential for wireless communication in Apple devices, helping iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other products maintain fast and reliable connections across 5G networks, Wi Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Although these tiny components often go unnoticed by consumers, they play a crucial role in ensuring the speed, signal quality, and battery efficiency expected from modern Apple products.


As part of the expanded partnership, Broadcom will invest approximately $1.5 billion to enlarge and modernize its manufacturing facility in Fort Collins, Colorado. Once completed, the factory is expected to produce at least 15 billion chips for Apple over the life of the agreement. The expansion is expected to create additional manufacturing capacity while supporting high skilled engineering and production jobs in the region.


Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook described the Colorado facility as an important part of the company's future, emphasizing that the advanced components produced there are critical to the performance and connectivity of Apple products. He said the investment reflects Apple's continued commitment to innovation while strengthening relationships with American suppliers capable of producing world class technology.


The announcement forms part of Apple's broader pledge to invest approximately $600 billion in the United States over the coming years. That larger initiative includes expanding domestic manufacturing, increasing research and development, supporting advanced chip production, and creating thousands of new jobs across several states. The Broadcom agreement represents the largest single manufacturing commitment announced so far under that investment strategy.


The deal also highlights Apple's continuing effort to diversify its supply chain while maintaining access to highly specialized components that remain difficult to manufacture at scale. Although Apple has successfully designed many of its own processors, including the Apple Silicon chips that power Macs and iPads, it continues relying on trusted partners such as Broadcom for complex wireless technologies that require years of engineering expertise and highly specialized manufacturing processes.


For Broadcom, the agreement provides long term certainty with one of its largest customers. Apple accounts for roughly one fifth of Broadcom's annual revenue, making the company one of the semiconductor manufacturer's most important business partners. Investors had recently questioned whether Apple might eventually replace Broadcom's wireless components with internally designed alternatives. The extension through 2031 largely eases those concerns by confirming Broadcom's continued role within Apple's hardware ecosystem for years to come.


The agreement also reflects broader changes taking place throughout the global semiconductor industry. Governments and technology companies have increasingly focused on expanding domestic chip manufacturing following years of supply chain disruptions that exposed vulnerabilities in global production networks. By increasing purchases of American made components, Apple joins a growing number of technology companies investing heavily in domestic manufacturing capacity while reducing dependence on overseas suppliers for critical technologies.


The Fort Collins expansion is expected to incorporate advanced manufacturing technologies capable of producing increasingly sophisticated wireless chips required for future generations of Apple devices. As smartphones, wearable devices, and other connected products become more powerful, demand for advanced radio frequency components continues growing alongside the rapid expansion of 5G networks and emerging wireless standards.


Despite Apple's continued investment in proprietary chip design, the company has repeatedly demonstrated that successful products often depend on close collaboration with specialized suppliers. Rather than bringing every technology in house, Apple continues partnering with companies that possess unique expertise in fields such as wireless communications, memory, display technology, and advanced manufacturing. The renewed Broadcom agreement reinforces that collaborative approach while ensuring access to critical components well into the next decade.


For Apple, the investment represents far more than a supply agreement. It reflects a long term strategy centered on strengthening American manufacturing, securing reliable access to critical technologies, and preparing for the next generation of connected devices.
