LONDON - In response to escalating shoplifting incidents, British bakery chain Greggs has initiated a trial in select stores, relocating self-serve refrigerated items such as sandwiches and bottled drinks behind the counter. This measure aims to mitigate theft and enhance safety for both staff and customers.

The trial is currently underway in at least five locations identified as shoplifting hotspots, including Whitechapel, East London. Under this new arrangement, customers must request chilled items from staff rather than accessing them directly. A Greggs spokesperson stated, "This is one of a number of initiatives we are trialing across a handful of shops which are exposed to higher levels of anti-social behavior. The safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority."

This initiative follows reports highlighting the frequency of thefts in certain Greggs outlets, with some stores experiencing incidents as often as every 20 minutes. In addition to repositioning products, Greggs has implemented other security measures, including installing protective screens at counters and employing full-time security personnel.

The broader context reveals a significant rise in shoplifting across the UK. According to the Office for National Statistics, shoplifting offences recorded by the police increased by 20% in 2024, totaling over 516,000 incidents. This surge has prompted retailers nationwide to invest in enhanced security protocols to protect their assets and personnel.

Despite these challenges, Greggs reported a pre-tax profit of £203.9 million in 2024, marking an 8.3% increase from the previous year. The company attributes this growth to the expansion of its store network, extended operating hours, and strategic price adjustments.

As Greggs continues to adapt to the evolving retail landscape, the effectiveness of these security measures will be closely monitored to determine their impact on reducing theft and ensuring a safe shopping environment for all patrons.
