NEW YORK - The New York Mets have announced the appointment of Lew Sherr, the current CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA), as their new President of Business Operations. Sherr, who has been with the USTA since 2010 and served as CEO since 2022, will begin his new role with the Mets in July 2025. His departure from the USTA was announced on Friday, and he will remain with the organization until the end of June to ensure a smooth transition.
During his tenure at the USTA, Sherr oversaw significant growth in tennis participation across the United States, as well as increased attendance and revenue for the U.S. Open. Under his leadership, the organization experienced higher revenues from sponsorships, ticket sales, and broadcasting rights.
In an interview at the French Open, Sherr expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Mets, stating, "I'm hugely excited about what's happening over there. (Mets owners) Steve and Alex Cohen have made a commitment to that team that is unrivaled in sports. You see it on the field, off the field."
The Mets have undergone several changes in their business operations leadership recently. Scott Havens, who served as the team's President of Business Operations since December 2023, departed earlier this week. Additionally, other key executives, including Chief Legal Officer Katie Pothier, Chief Marketing Officer Andy Goldberg, Chief Communications Officer Nancy Elder, and Senior Vice President of Finance Peter Woll, have left the organization since November.
At the USTA, Sherr's departure has prompted the appointment of Brian Vahaly and Andrea ... as interim co-CEOs. Vahaly currently serves as the chairman of the USTA Board, while Hirsch holds the positions of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Legal Officer. The organization has initiated a search for Sherr's permanent replacement.
Sherr's recent initiatives at the USTA included unveiling an $800 million renovation plan for Arthur Ashe Stadium and implementing changes to the U.S. Open mixed doubles format to attract top singles players.
As Sherr prepares to transition to his new role with the Mets, he emphasized his commitment to ensuring a seamless handover at the USTA and expressed confidence in the organization's future direction.
