Nvidia is preparing to make another major investment in the infrastructure powering the artificial intelligence boom, with plans to invest as much as $3 billion in power infrastructure developer Lancium. The proposed deal would deepen Nvidia’s involvement in the massive data center expansion taking place across the United States as technology companies compete for the computing capacity and electricity needed to develop increasingly powerful AI systems.

According to a report from The Information, Nvidia plans to initially invest approximately $2 billion in Lancium in exchange for a stake of roughly 20 percent. Lancium is backed by investment firm Blackstone and is involved in developing the Texas data center campus connected to Stargate, the enormous artificial intelligence infrastructure initiative involving OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank.

Nvidia could contribute another $1 billion if Lancium reaches certain development targets. Those conditions reportedly include securing connections to the electrical grid, an increasingly important requirement as AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity. If all milestones are reached, Nvidia’s total investment could climb to approximately $3 billion.

The investment highlights how the artificial intelligence race is rapidly expanding beyond semiconductors and software. Nvidia became the dominant supplier of advanced chips used for training and operating AI systems, but those processors require massive data centers filled with servers, cooling systems and reliable electricity. As demand for AI computing grows, securing enough power has emerged as one of the industry’s biggest challenges.

Lancium has positioned itself at the center of that infrastructure expansion. The company specializes in developing large scale power and data center projects, particularly in Texas, where abundant land and access to energy infrastructure have attracted billions of dollars in technology investment. Its involvement with the Stargate campus makes the company especially significant as the project grows into one of the largest AI infrastructure developments in the country.

Stargate was announced as an ambitious effort to dramatically increase America’s artificial intelligence computing capacity. The initiative involves OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle and has been associated with plans for as much as $500 billion in infrastructure investment over several years. Nvidia’s technology is expected to play an important role in supplying the advanced computing hardware needed for projects of this scale.

The potential Lancium investment also fits into a much broader spending wave across the technology industry. Major companies are committing billions of dollars to data centers, chips, electricity infrastructure and cloud computing as demand for generative AI continues growing. The scale of those investments has raised questions about costs, power availability and whether demand will ultimately justify the enormous amount of capital being deployed.

For Nvidia, however, investing directly in companies responsible for building AI infrastructure could strengthen its position throughout the industry. Instead of simply supplying processors, the chipmaker is increasingly becoming financially connected to the companies and projects that require its hardware.

The reported Lancium deal demonstrates how electricity, land and data center capacity are becoming nearly as important as the chips themselves in determining who can compete at the highest levels of artificial intelligence. As the AI boom enters its next phase, Nvidia appears determined to secure a place not only inside the servers powering that transformation, but across the infrastructure surrounding them.
